Work Placements for Secondary School Students
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is on the job training that allows students in years 10, 11 and 12 to enhance their vocational studies by taking on industry placements in their area of study.
Students looking for placements are studying a qualification, with their workplace learning being on-the-job training undertaken as part of their studies.
It enables students to learn and develop industry-standard technical skills and to also gain a deeper understanding of employers’ and colleagues’ workplace expectations.
The placement is usually in a one or two week block, or one day a week over a number of weeks as negotiated with the host employer.
Employers are expected to provide an induction to the workplace, supervision and at least $5 a day in pay.
There are opportunities to:
- enhance skill development
- provide practical application of industry knowledge
- provide evidence of competency related to a student’s vocational studies
- increased employment opportunities
